Since the beginning of the Balkan Wars in 1991, there has been constant academic and media interest in the region, almost always focused on its most violent and striking aspects: wars, ethnic cleansing, murderous nationalisms, age-old hatreds, and more. This book offers a different image, more intimate yet complex, of the Balkans, made up of reflections by specialists from NGOs, the military, and various academic areas. It is hoped that readers will come to view the Balkan Peninsula more positively and understand the challenges and the richness of the region, and its important role in European history, more holistically.
